Are GMO Foods Safe To Eat?

There has been much talk recently on the subject of consuming GMO foods. With so many opinions, studies and theories flying around on the internet its hard to find clear information about whether GMO foods are safe to eat.
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals.
The research looking at the long term effects and safety of consuming these foods has been varied, with both sides of the fence screaming that they are correct. Here are some of the facts related to GMO foods.
- They require less pesticides and herbicides compared to traditionally grown produce
- The produce can be engineered to stay fresh for longer, take the tomato for example in which the shelf life has dramatically increased to meet the needs of the supermarkets and consumers.
- GM crops can be designed to withstand fluctuations in the weather, meaning that they provide sufficient yields despite poor conditions, weather, or just a bad season.
- They can actually engineer foods to contain specific nutrients that may be lacking in a population, take for example golden rice which is now rich in vitamin A.
Aside from the points above which are generally orientated towards a more positive view on GMO, there is a growing body of individuals opposed to these food products.
- There has been research showing significant allergic reactions to GMO foods, genetic modification can mix or add proteins that weren’t original to the produce. This has been shown to cause new allergic reactions.
- Furthermore there have been cases where proteins from an organism that individuals are allergic to has been combined with products that individuals weren’t originally allergic to. Prompting sever allergic reactions to foods that once could be consumed.
In all honesty, I don’t believe there is anywhere near enough long term research on the topic to make an informed discussion. However until I start seeing consistent studies showing its safety I will be avoiding them. If you want to avoid GMO foods its easy to do, there is no conspiracy, simply:
- Eat organic where possible
- Avoid processed foods
Nothing fancy or rocket science just good old clean eating which the motive8 personal training team recommend for optimum results.
