porridge

Some of you may remember those old porridge adverts where a certain brand of instant porridge would surround you with a warm fiery glow after eating it. And these adverts were always on TV in the winter months and featured kids in scarves. For some reason, cold dark mornings make me think of that and I instantly reach for the porridge (but the proper make it yourself from oats variety). But as well as the warm, comfy feeling porridge gives you, we love porridge for other reasons too! So here are the benefits of porridge!

  • Protein – in 28g of oats (the average of a small bowl of porridge) there’s 5g of protein!
  • Complex and low GI carbohydrates – meaning that we digest it slowly providing us with slow releasing and lasting energy; this also means a lower/slower rise in blood glucose (sugar) and, therefore insulin levels.
  • Fibre – also helps regulate blood-sugar levels and reduces the risk of high cholesterol
  • Vitamins & Minerals – including iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin E & B
  • Quick Food – it doesn’t take long to cook, even in a pan, so there’s no excuses for not having time to make it
  • Endless Variety of Toppings! Add nuts, seeds, berries, honey, cinnamon, organic peanut butter to name just a few (but obviously watch your portion sizes!)!
  • Have Porridge Cold or Hot – we’ve posted a number of recipes for overnight oats; gone are the days where cold porridge looked like wallpaper paste!

So what are you waiting for – get stuck in!!
