The 26th September is National Fitness Day (NFD). A whole day dedicated especially to fitness!  NFD will raise awareness of the benefits of fitness and activity on our health. At Motive8 North, this is our passion and we have a whole week of promotions and activities coming up. Each trainer will also be writing a blog on “what does fitness mean to you?” to tie in with the event.

What Does Fitness Mean to Me?

This quote from Ashley Montagu “to die young as late as possible” would sum up my idea of life. I love my life and my experiences and want to be able to enjoy them for as long as I can. This is what my fitness brings to me. As well as pushing and challenging my mind and body, fitness gives me the tools to stay healthy to be able to do all the crazy things I want to do. Fitness to me is not only physical fitness but also mental/emotional fitness and believe they go hand-in-hand.

My Fitness:

  • Eating well and exercise makes me feel good, physically and mentally and for this reason it is my lifestyle choice. Something which comes (relatively*) easily. *I still face challenges to stay motivated and resist certain temptations.
  • When I feel good I have more confidence. This confidence then translates to me trying new things and performing better.
  • Fitness is less about how I look and more about what I can do and how I feel. My physical activity makes me feel strong and mobile which makes me feel capable and independent, whether that’s me moving house by myself or hiking over a volcano.
  • I am my only competition. I can use others to motivate me but at the end of the day I only have to be better than I was yesterday.
  • My main fitness passions are yoga and weight training but I also love swing dancing, swimming and walking. I  like  to try new activities too and have done anything from climbing, to martial arts, to pole dancing.
  • Diet is a crucial part of my physical fitness, eating the right things to help me perform and feel good. I follow a plant based pescatarian diet but don’t deny myself treats if I want them. I haven’t drunk any alcohol since the beginning of the year (2018) deciding that the cons now outweighed the pros.

Fitness will mean something different to everyone. But there is no denying the fact that fitness will benefit health in some way. And it’s about finding YOUR fitness and what works for you. Perhaps it’s trying a personal trainer to get you started, joining a class, entering a race or teaming up for a charity event. There are so many different ways to keep fit, find one you enjoy and it will never be a chore. Starting is the hardest part, use fitness day to get going, then don’t stop!
