Instead of something directly related to exercise, nutrition and health, I am going to write about what my typical week consists of 6 months after graduating from university. Obviously you will get an idea of my training and nutrition as we go through too, which as a personal trainer is obviously something I care about, a lot.

If I haven’t sent you to sleep during the first 5 days of the week, you may even get to find out how I spend my time when not at work during the weekends. I hope you enjoy…

Background

As some of my personal training clients and motive8 north  members will know I spend half of my time working for motive8 and half my time working with Yorkshire County Cricket Club as a Sport Science Intern during the 2016/17 Winter Strength and Conditioning Programme. I am currently living in York with my girlfriend, but with aspirations to move Leeds over the summer.

Monday

Yorkshire training 4 days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. On each of the these days I need to get to Headingley Stadium (where they train) for 9am…if anyone has tried to get into Headingley at that time they will know that is a lot easier said than done! Once there I am with the players until about 3pm, doing a mixture speed and power work with them. During the days at Headingley I always bring my own lunch. Usually a real variety of stuff, I am most prepared on a Monday after doing a little bit of food prep. My personal favourites are pesto chicken breast with a mixture of roast vegetables or a mixed salad with a variety of meats, seeds and nuts…a little bit of chilli or spice helps bring a salad to life. Finishing at 3 gives me a 2 hour window to get my training in for the day – a whole body strength session. An example of strength session for me is attached at the bottom.  After that I am at motive8 for the rest of the evening, doing what I love, training my personal training clients.

Tuesday

Tuesday begins fairly similar to a Monday but this time I’ll time I’ll try to fit in a long distance run in the morning, I try to get 2 or 3 conditioning sessions in a week and the LSD ideally will be on a morning before work. Lunch will again will be prepared from Sunday evening again so something similar to Mondays lunch (how boring right!?). Tuesday evenings is generally when I am busiest at the present with clients so my evenings are jam pack with a good variety of people to train. For an evening meal I’ll treat myself to some sweet potatoes with my meal, but only if I get my long run in earlier in the day.

Wednesday

No Yorkshire…so a lie-in Yippee! Get a chance to make lunch on the morning and plan my classes for later in the day, then get to the studio for just before midday. Typically I will try and get in my second weight session of the week, a little higher rep range to work on a bit of hypertrophy – again a whole body session…not a fan volume and squats –DOMS! Again in the evening I am nice and busy with class and clients. I am the chef on a Wednesday evening usually and I would look to cook something quick like a vegetable stir fry with chicken or prawns or a sweet potato shepherd’s pie if I am feeling adventurous (for my skillset in the kitchen).

Thursday

Back at Headingley, traffic usually isn’t an issue by the end of the week so that is one less thing to worry about. Again finish around 2 or 3 in the afternoon and like get my workout in straight after that – my last strength training of the week. Typically not too busy on the evening either, so again I am in charge of what goes on the menu, we have just bought a new soup maker so I like to play around with different combinations. Also on a Thursday night I am a bit obsessed with a ‘who done it’ called Unforgotten, my only TV series I am into at the moment.  Only problem is my football team play on a Thursday night so that sometime causes issues (anyone guess who I support?).

Friday

Little different format for today, I have couple of early personal training clients who I love training early on a morning. Once I am finished with my client I quickly have to get up to Leeds Beckett running track where Yorkshire do their endurance training. It gets pretty cold up there open to all the elements so I am well covered up, still one of my favourite sessions of the week though getting to run up through my old university seeing some familiar faces. The weekend, or nearly, I have recently started running S&C sessions for my cricket team Scarborough Cricket Club so I have a drive back to the seaside and have a 1 or 2 hour session with them every Friday. I’ll often join in as well as leading the sessions, that way I get in my 5th workout of the week.

So there you have it, my typical week as a personal trainer. Hopefully I haven’t bored you too much…

Weekends I love to spend time with my friends and family, my dad has a golden retriever called Django who we love taking on long walks back in North Yorkshire in the Wolds, up on the Moors and sometimes even on the beach.
